Electric distribution: not just wires and poles
When we think of the infrastructure that brings electricity to your home, it’s common to picture power poles and wires. But there’s actually a lot of utility infrastructure on or under the ground too! It may even be on the utility right of way on your property and we need your help to keep those areas clear.
Silver switch cabinets are usually near parks and cul-de-sacs and green pad-mounted transformer cabinets are found in residential neighbourhoods. Underground vaults are simply covered with lids similar to a manhole cover.
We understand that utility infrastructure doesn't always fit your landscaping vision. But this equipment does need about three metres of open space around them to allow crews to work safely and efficiently. Please don’t plant trees or shrubs near them and keep fences, decorative rocks, and permanent structures at least three metres away.
By keeping that area clear, you’re helping keep everyone safe and protecting the people who maintain our energy systems.
It’s a small action that makes a big difference. Thank you for doing your part.
Recreation fees survey now live
The City of Medicine Hat is undertaking a review of recreation fees and charges to help ensure recreation services remain accessible, sustainable, and aligned with community priorities.
Recent community survey results indicate that recreation facilities and programs are considered an important municipal service by Medicine Hat residents.
As part of this review, the City is seeking input from residents on the principles and priorities that should help guide future decisions related to recreation fees, affordability, access, and public investment in recreation services.
This survey is intended to gather high-level feedback and should take approximately 3-5 minutes to complete. Responses will be considered alongside stakeholder engagement, municipal benchmarking, financial analysis, and strategic priorities to inform the development of future Fees and Charges Framework.

Restaurant occupancy inspection guide
The City’s Safety Codes team has completed a restaurant occupancy inspection guide.
This guide can be used as a valuable tool for the business community! It was developed to help prospective business owners understand the key occupancy requirements for this type of operation.
While the guide is not exhaustive, it highlights the most common pressure point items that can lead to delays or unexpected costs.
