Commemorative Bench program

The Commemorative Bench Program provides a meaningful opportunity for individuals and families to celebrate the life of a loved one, honour an individual or group, or highlight a cause or event by donating a park or trail bench in scenic locations throughout Medicine Hat.

Commemorative Benches are thoughtfully placed throughout the community alongside trails and within parks to provide residents and visitors with increased opportunities to enjoy the park and trail system and adjacent areas, provide resting spots for users and promote active living.

All Commemorative Benches are adorned with a plaque commemorating or acknowledging an individual or group and tell the story of the impact they have had on the lives of others.

Commemorative Benches are available on a 10-year term with the option to renew at the end of the term. Donations to the Commemorative Bench Program are eligible for a tax donation receipt and are non-refundable.

Commemorative benches are selected for their high quality and ability to withstand varying weather conditions experienced in Medicine Hat.

All benches are powder coated with a steel frame and are installed on a concrete pad wherever possible. In the event a concrete pad is not possible, alternative installation options will be discussed with the donor.

Each Commemorative bench can be adorned with one 2” x 8” personalized plaque. The plaque inscription can contain up to 40 words in a variety of fonts and colours and final approval is at the discretion of the City.

Benches are strategically selected and placed to compliment the natural environment, allow free flow of people, bikes, and activities, allow access for equipment and personnel and to provide donors with a unique and individual location for their bench.

Bench colours are placed as follows:

  • Cemetery Bench: Grey with black frame
  • Premium Bench Location: Tan bench with black frame
  • Standard Bench Location: Blue bench with black frame near water or green bench with black frame in green spaces.

All Commemorative Benches and plaques are the property of the City of Medicine Hat and are maintained, repaired, or replaced at the discretion of the Parks and Recreation department and at no cost to the donor.

The City of Medicine Hat Parks and Recreation Department supports donors from the initial application to the end of the ten-year term.

All applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis for areas located within municipal boundaries. Bench location options will be discussed with donors upon receipt of their application. Locations have been selected with scenic views, maintenance, user flow and appropriate bench spacing in mind.
