Animal Pound Services
The City of Medicine Hat has operated the Animal Pound Services (APS) facility on a permanent basis since June 2025, after assuming operations from the previous service provider.
The City also prioritizes partnership opportunities with groups like the Humane Society (SPCA), vet clinic(s), and other animal services (grooming, daycare, cremation, etc.), for the provision of services. Staff are also working to implement online licensing.

Fees: Adoptions, Impound, Licences
All cats, kittens, and adult dogs will be adopted out of the APS facility already spayed or neutered, vaccinated up to date, and microchipped. An additional booster vaccination may still be required.
Puppies will be adopted out of the APS facility with vaccines up to date and will receive a microchip. An additional booster vaccine may still be required. A spay/neuter contract will be required for all puppies not yet sterilized. Surgeries will be completed through APS at a designated veterinary clinic around 6-8 months of age.

APS vs. SPCA: Who does what?
Animal Pound Services and the Medicine Hat SPCA are two different organizations which provide essential services. Each plays a unique role in supporting animals in Medicine Hat. Please note the following information, including the APS services listed above, to help differentiate between the two service providers:

What do I do if I lose my cat or dog?
- Call Animal Pound Services to check if your pet has been taken to the facility
- Call Municipal Bylaw Enforcement to report a missing or lost animal: (403) 529-8481
- Call vet clinics to see if an injured animal has been brought into their facility
What do I do if I find a lost cat or dog WITHIN Medicine Hat city limits
- Call and report to Municipal Bylaw Enforcement: (403) 529-8481 if you've found a cat or dog and are keeping it at your residence while you try to find its owner
- Take animal to the Animal Pound Services (APS) facility
- Take animal to a vet clinic to see if they have a microchip

What does Animal Pound Services do with cats and dogs that have been found?

Animals are checked for microchip, tattoo or identification tag to identify owners
- Animals with identification: Owners are contacted
- Animals without identification: Animals are posted on the Animal Pound Services Facebook page
- Animals will be held and cared for in the Animal Pound Services facility for 72 hours until an owner can claim them
- Animals held for longer than 72 hours and not reclaimed are assessed by Animal Pound Services to determine the best course of action for the animal (as per s.48.1 of Bylaw No. 3935)
