The Existing Homes Incentive Program is designed to assist property owners with the cost of energy-saving retrofits making existing homes more energy efficient.

*NEW* for 2026

The Existing Homes Incentive program now carries a greater number of eligible upgrades as well as increased rebate values.

A post-renovation EnerGuide Evaluation is a new requirement for program participation and the deadline for document submission to request a rebate is December 15, 2026.

Please plan your renovation projects to consider these incentive program changes.

Why do I need an EnerGuide Home Evaluation?

Understanding how your house works before starting a renovation will help ensure you understand your home's current energy performance.

An EnerGuide Home Evaluation provides personalized advice for improving your home's efficiency, identifying which renovations are recommended for your home which may save you money on utility bills over time.

Eligible renovations

Full details on HAT Smart eligible renovation can be found on the individual pages by clicking on the following links:

Only renovations identified in your EnerGuide Home Evaluation Renovation Upgrade Report, and those which are included in the Existing Homes Incentive Program, are eligible.

1. Determine eligibility

Before completing any renovations, read the Existing Homes Incentive Program Terms and Conditions and the information for each of the eligible renovations. Don’t forget to check out the FAQs!

To qualify for a rebate:

  • Applicants must receive a City of Medicine Hat residential electric and/or natural gas utility statement in their name for an existing home or, for rental homes, be named as the homeowner on the utility account.
    • HAT Smart Incentives are not available for commercial entities. So, if you live in a condo and your utilities are paid for through your condo fees or by the condo association, you would not be eligible for Existing Homes Incentive Program rebates since the condo building itself would be considered a commercial enterprise.
  • Eligible renovations are only those recommended by a registered NRCan Energy Advisor and described in the pre-renovation EnerGuide Home Evaluation's Renovation Upgrade Report.

Failure to comply with Existing Homes Incentive Program requirements and/or terms and conditions will cause your Reservation of Funds and/or Request for Rebate to be declined.

2. Do your research

Know the difference between EnerGuide and ENERGY STAR®.

NRCan provides valuable information to help you choose the product that’s right for your home, as well as the most up to date product information published by the Government of Canada.

3. Complete your home energy evaluation

Contact a service organization to schedule and complete an EnerGuide Home Evaluation. Walk through your home with the advisor as they work and make sure to ask questions. You may uncover some simple ways to reduce consumption.

Once your home evaluation is complete, you can decide which of the recommended retrofits to tackle first. Only retrofits or renovations recommended in your EnerGuide Home Evaluation are eligible for the Existing Homes Incentives. 4. Plan your renovations

Once your pre-renovation EnerGuide Home Evaluation is complete, you can decide which of the recommended renovations to tackle first. Only renovations recommended in your EnerGuide Home Evaluation’s Renovation Upgrade Report are eligible for the Existing Homes Incentives Program rebates. Choosing a contractor

Not sure how to choose a contractor? See what the Government of AlbertaCanadian Home Builders' Association and Solar Alberta suggest.

Check here to see if your contractor has a current City of Medicine Hat business license.

All projects must be completed by a licensed installer with a City of Medicine Hat business license.

5. Reserve funds

Fill out the Reservation of Funds (see button below), choosing only the improvements indicated on your EnerGuide Home Evaluation's Renovation Upgrade Report that you intend to complete before December 15, 2026.

An approved Reservation of Funds offers security to Existing Homes Incentive Program Participants that rebates will be available at time of Request for Rebate. If you do not have an approved Reservation of Funds and submit a Request for Rebate, you will only receive a rebate if there are funds available.

If you decide to tackle additional projects after you submit your first request for Reservation of Funds, a new Reservation of Funds submission is required for those renovations. Your new Reservation of Funds will be placed in the queue for processing based on the date it is received and may be approved, should funds be available. You will not receive a Reservation of Funds approval if program funds are fully subscribed.

Your pre-renovation EnerGuide Home Evaluation, including the Homeowner Information Sheet, Energy Label, and Renovation Upgrade Report are to be submitted within 60 days of an approved Reservation of Funds (if you did not include it when you originally reserved funds).

6. Complete your renovations

Home renovations must be completed, and receipts must be dated, between January 1, 2026 and December 15, 2026 to qualify for rebates under the Existing Homes Incentive Program.

Collect your documents! As you complete your project(s), save all required documentation (listed with each eligible renovation) to submit with your final Request for Rebate.

7. Request your rebate

The maximum rebate for combined applications or total incentives in the Existing Homes Incentive Program is $5,000 per home, per homeowner.

Only one (1) Request for Rebate will be accepted for the Existing Homes Incentive Program.

Payment

You have two options for receiving your HAT Smart rebate:

  • Direct deposit
  • Credit on utility account

To receive payment by direct deposit, complete the Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) Registration Form and include this with your Request for Rebate.

Rebate payments may be delayed if there are any outstanding permitting concerns from the relevant planning commission.
