Drain water heat recovery

Drain water heat recovery transfers heat from the shower drain water to pre-warm the cold water supply before it goes into the water heater.

Heat pump water heater

A heat pump water heater replaces a conventional storage tank water heater. Heat is sourced from the air around the tank, delivering hot water at a much higher efficiency than conventional water heaters. 

Tankless gas water heater

Tankless water heaters, also known as on-demand or instantaneous, only heat water when it’s needed, avoiding heat loss from water stored in a tank that is regularly re-heated to maintain a safe water temperature.

Eligibility criteria

For Drain-water Heat Recovery, the unit:
  • must be Natural Resources Canada approved.

For Heat Pump Hot Water Heater, the unit:

  • must be ENERGY STAR® Certified to the most recent published version
  • must replace an existing, less efficient, primary water heater

For Tankless Hot Water Heater, the unit:

  • must be ENERGY STAR® Certified to the most recent published version
  • must replace an existing, less efficient, primary water heater
  • must have a UEF of 0.9 or higher

 

Rebate amount

Rebates are paid on each qualifying unit.

  • $150 for Drain Water Heat Recovery
  • $500 for Heat Pump Water Heater
  • $500 for Tankless Gas Water Heater

Maximum rebate: $500 (1 qualifying unit)

 

Supporting documentation for Request for Rebate

Please consider the timing of your project to ensure paid receipts and post-renovation EnerGuide Evaluations are available within the submission deadlines to avoid requests for rebate being rejected by HAT Smart. 

All receipts and invoices must be dated between January 1 and December 15, 2026.

This service is conducted prior to beginning your project, and includes the following:

  • Home Owner Information Sheet
  • Energy Label
  • Renovation Upgrade Report

A detailed quote should include a description of your products and purchase including:

  • Manufacturer Name
  • Model/Series Number
  • Unifor Energy Factor (UEF; for tankless gas water heaters)
  • Total Costs  
  • Unit Specification Sheet showing ENERGY STAR® Certification

A receipt which shows full payment has been provided to the installer.

All photos must clearly show the installed unit and the model and serial numbers.

This service is conducted following project completion and includes the following:

  • Home Owner Information Sheet
  • Energy Label 

Requests for Rebate which do not include the required documentation, and information will be rejected by HAT Smart. A new Request for Rebate will be required, which will be processed in the order it is received.
